Are Humans Really That Modern Model They Proclaim?

It is sometimes amazing to me how humans in modern society try to convince themselves that they are so highly evolved and better than all the other animals on the planet. Further, people that live in first world nations claim that all the others are nothing more than tribal savages. Still, all of this begs the question of; how different is modern man really? Yes, they have an evolved brain, and we have modern jet aircraft, sewer treatment plants, medicines, and all sorts of other things.
Nevertheless, consider if you will that perhaps mankind is no different than he ever was, or only slightly different, rather he's been thrust into a new environment as an overlay. If we took humans which were living in jungles and tribes 20,000 years ago, and put them into modern societies as babies today would things really be any different? This gets to the point of nature versus nurture of course, but I'd like to take this one step further and give you a recent example.
There was an interesting article published on August 15, 2012 titled; "Cops: Teens beat man because they were just bored," by Andrew Mach, NBC News which stated; "A man in Ohio was severely beaten by six teenage boys who said they did so because they were bored, police allege. The man was walking home from the store, in Ohio with a six-pack of beer, looking forward to a quiet evening watching sports, when something hit him in the back of the head."
Indeed, everyone was shocked and outraged by this event, but it would appear to me that young men full of testosterone in groups have always acted this way throughout history. Why is anyone surprised? If they are left to their own devices these are the types of things they will do, and the individual carrying the beer was naïve to think otherwise, and he obviously wasn't paying attention to his surroundings, and didn't have any sense of situational awareness.
This doesn't alleviate the fact that a crime was done, as this is considered unacceptable in our society, but it does get back to the root major problem of nature itself. If these things happen, then perhaps it's because mankind is still an animal, underneath the guise of this modern civilization in a society that considers itself above the fray. Is it really? You see, I'm not surprised in the least that this event occurred rather I am surprised that everyone is so shocked.
It's also naïve to think that things can't get out of control in a mass mob of hysteria and the entire society breakdown, because humans are humans after all, and we are not immune to these realities no matter how much we try to sweep them under the carpet. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
